Can I use AI Art in my children's book?
This video was so helpful. I was about to put this information in the section where people can post their review photos 😆...glad I researched the proper way first. Thanks a bunch!!
Yay! I'm so glad my video helped you! Thank you so much for watching! ❤️
Great video! Thanks so much for the information. I am considering using a Canva free element (gift box) on the cover of my book. It would be this one element in addition to other illustrations (from an artist - non Canva). I've altered the image by adding some highlights, drawing some additional outlines, adding some shading. Would you think that using just one element would be acceptable, or do I need to add another element or alter the image even more? Sorry for the long question. Thanks so much!
Hi! If it's in addition to the other illustrations then you're definitely ok! Plus on top of that you altered it as well. Yep you are good 👍
Awhh im so sorry, But im sure your cat loves you very much❤️❤️!! Some cats are just like that.. And he/she is very cute! 😊
Hee hee thanks!
Best video ever on this topic! You're awesome!
Yay!! Thank you so much!!
Thank you for this great video!
You're so welcome!! ❤️
Thank you so, so much, Heather! I just moved from Affinity Design 1 to 2 and was so frustrated that my SVG files weren’t importing into Design Space correctly. I use AD exclusively for designing stained glass patterns and then import DS to cut the pattern pieces on permanent vinyl, It makes stained glass creation so, so much more accurate and fun. Anyway, you rock! Thank you! I will be posting a link to your video to my Stained Glass groups. Others will love this as much as I do. ❤
OMG that's SO cool!!! I dabbled in stained glass a little bit! I even have the supplies at home! But I never have time to do it anymore. Some day I hope I can pick it back up!
Heather, you have provided a great service to all of us children's book authors! I have a problem: KDP told me that my interior trim size is not big enough and gave me the dimensions. Of course, I thought it was correct. How do I change ALL 36 canvases to the proper trim size?
Oh I got your email and replied there, but the way I would personally do it is with Photoshop Actions (run a resize action on all images). I never resize anything in Procreate because (unfortunately) Procreate is horrible at resizing, things always end up blurry. Photoshop is the way to go for resizing.
This is an amazing tutorial!! I am using it every time I want to create an epub file. Thank you very much for your work! Btw could you make a similar tutorial for using Scribus, too? I am sure I could follow your explanation how to use it.
Hi! Thanks so much, I'm so glad you like my video! What are you aiming to do in Scribus / what is your end goal (so I know how to structure the tutorial)?
@@HeatherCashArt I would like to publish a picture book. Currently, I am using Canva, but IngramSpark always complains about some "transfer curves" in the pdf I downloaded from Canva. I tried to use Scribus, but Scribus is very complex. There are good tutorials for formatting novels, but I have not found any useful material for picture books with bleeds yet. It would be a lifesaver if you could make a tutorial using the same book as in the Sigil video as an example. Thank you for your videos, they help me a lot!
@bcs-xq9hm oh, well the only thing you need to do to fix that curves error is to save your PDF as a PDF-X. I use Adobe Acrobat to do that. I have a tutorial on it! This will fix it: ua-cam.com/video/bGzJ7_Vj9Is/v-deo.html
@@HeatherCashArt I checked out your Adobe Acrobat tutorial; thank you! I do not have a subscription, but I will use a trial to solve this problem for now. However, it would be great if you could make a Scribus tutorial video anyway. I believe Scribus can also save files as PDF-X, and I have found very positive reviews of this software on the Internet. Thank you! Bori
More useful information from Heather!!! Thank you!
You're so welcome, so glad you like it!!
Love it!!
Yay!!!
Hello Heather- I purchased a service from you on your website, (I'll Fix Your KDP Errors/Troubleshoot Your PDF), but everytime I try to email you- it doesn't work and my email bounces back- I need help! Thanks
Oh no! You can try these email addresses: heather@heathercash.com heathercashart@gmail.com raspberryh@gmail.com
I downloaded a CMYK pdf of my pages directly from canva, is this ready to upload or do I need to do it using procreate?
It is ready to upload! Just make sure you select "flatten" when exporting.
@@HeatherCashArt Awesome, thank you
hello! i have a question. why did you make the blank page 8.5 tall when all the other pages were 8.25? and also, does the front and back cover count as pages?
Hi! My final page size (aka trim size) is 8.25x8.25. So the dimensions of each page as files will be 8.5 high by 8.365 wide to account for bleed. You can see an explanation in the previous video of this series (page layout in Photoshop) and you can also check out my video "what is bleed?" The front and back cover are not pages. They will be a separate PDF. Check out the video from this same series where I walk you through creating the cover. 🙂
Heather, you are so helpful, I love your videos 😊I have learned so much from you!
Thank you! I'm so glad!! 💕
The addition of the little elements on the text pages adds So much character! I like the use of the frame. I am going to have to redo my first book with all of your tips!! Thank you! I'm glad you are feeling better!
Yay I'm so glad you like it!! Thank you so much!
Another great video. I like the idea of frames that you used.
Thank you!!
Very nice step-by-step video. I really like the layout of this book. I think I will do my next book a little like this book. Thanks for the great information as always.
I'm so glad, thank you so much! 💕
Great video!
Thank you I'm so glad you liked it!
doesn't work for me...
Are you getting minimum 72 page error? Or 75? Or another error?
@@HeatherCashArt 75
@@netashla that's different, that's the hardcover book error. Hardcover books have a minimum page requirement of 75. So you either need to change to paperback, or add more pages to your book.
@@HeatherCashArt I guess I just don’t understand the difference. It seems that you are able to publish under 75 pp, if i understand correctly..? What’s the difference between the 72 and 75 pp notice. By the way I really appreciate your help. It’s not as easy to find it elsewhere online, so thank you!
@@netashla You can publish under 75 pages if it's a paperback book. But if you are getting the 75 page error, then you have selected hardcover, because for hardcover books KDP has the minimum requirement that the book has to be at least 75 pages. So rather than publishing a hardcover book, you'll need to switch to paperback.
If the book is in a PDF and put into an art board how are each page edited and formatted ?
Hi! I'm not sure I understand the question. Are you using Photoshop to lay out your book? If so, then you would edit and format it in Photoshop.
Sent you an email

Is it possible to sell below 20 pgs in kdp.? I m planning for coloring books for kids. Plz help
Hi! Check out this video! ua-cam.com/video/p3M7X0GaRgA/v-deo.html Hope that helps!
I want to make the middle page on my book as spread page without cutting, is that possible?
You'll still need to cut it in half for the PDF, but then if it's perfectly in the middle of the book, the two halves will be printed next to each other to create one piece, if that makes sense.
Another thing. I did all this and it still did not work. I then completely closed the tab and opened a new one and it worked. Sometimes it could just be that you had the tab open for too long. Which in my case, 2 days (I never closed my tabs or switched off my laptop and left it on sleep). So no matter how many times I refreshed the page after flattening the PDF, it only worked when I opened a new tab completely.
Oh that is a great tip!!! Thanks so much!!
Hi! Your videos are great! Easy to understand 🙏🏽 I’m in the process of publishing my first book (coloring activity book) I’m waiting for Amazon to approve it. My question is can I change the cover once they approve the book. I made a better cover last night. 😂 Thanks in advance 🙏🏽
Awesome! I'm so glad you like my videos! Yes you can change the cover after it's approved! You'll just click the 3 dots next to the book in your bookshelf, and select "edit content" and you can upload a new cover 🙂
@@HeatherCashArt thank you soooo much🙏🏽
@@HeatherCashArt I wanted to give you a big thank you for that little push you gave me to publish/ upload. I was watching another from another person and they were saying do not do certain kinds of books - activities , coloring books because everyone is doing them. Same day I was on your page and saw a video and basically you said just do it, of course your going to make mistakes but you’ll learn from it and get better. Something like that. Of course anything you do that’s new is scary that’s where faith comes in. I’m excited for this adventure Thanks again.
@@BebeNow oh my gosh I'm so glad!! Congrats on publishing, yes it's true you just have to do it! You can always find a million reasons why you shouldn't do something, for any project! The people who are successful don't listen to that negativity and they just do it anyways 🙂❤️ Great job!!!
This was incredible! Thank you so much!
You're so very welcome ☺️
New subscriber. Excellent info and guidance. I'll definitely be using these steps to add A+ content to my books...
Yay!! Thank you!!
Your tutorial was super helpful and easy to mirror. Thank you!
Thank you, I'm so glad you liked it!
Hi Heather. I have an even pages of 42 that I created on a spread. Do I have to take it apart as a single page to upload to KDP? The cover page stays at a full spread too. If I upload at full spread on all, the extra blank page at the front wouldn't that be a single page? Thank you so much for all your videos.
Hi! Yes you do need to break your spreads up into single pages. And yes you're right, if you just upload a PDF with all your pages then you will have one by itself at the beginning and it will throw all the others off. So you will need to add a blank page (or title page, copyright page, just any page really) at the beginning so it can be that first page that's all by itself. Then the rest will match up properly. Hope that helps! Heather
So I need some major guidance lol. I am using the pro version of Canva, and I try to upload the book and everything looks like thumbnails on the screen instead of full pages I so confused if I it wouldn’t even upload it, I tried to do a hard cover. It wouldn’t let me do. I had to switch it to a soft cover then I had to go back in a change and get a new ISPN number. It’s been terrible. Very frustrated
So, do you have it working now as a paperback?
@@HeatherCashArt yes.. so here’s what I did. I originally created the entire book by using a project and then when I watched your video, you said the thing about going to the top right corner to create custom size, put in your numbers so I wonder if that’s my problem, and if I need to drop and drag my entire book over to a new template. What I tried to do was go into my project and re-size it to the numbers that I picked obviously when it uploaded there no bigger than an inch probably LOL on the screen.
@@godsgirl38357 I would probably just resize the document instead of copy and pasting over to a new project. When you export, are you selecting PDF Print, check the box for Flatten PDF, and make sure you DON'T check "Crop Marks & Bleed"?
amazing video, thank you!
You're so welcome!
Thank you very much for this! Would the new magic studio for creating art, which uses AI, still fall under the same category, or would that fall under the same issue as using AI on other websites? I am also wondering, please, when writing who illustrated the book (like on the cover, etc.) , how would I word that if the illustrations are created using canva or if part of canva is used to create it or edit it? Thank you!
Hi! If you use Magic Studio then you are using AI, which is whole other thing - I have a video on it, "Can I use AI for my children's book?" For illustration credit, you would just leave that part out. You don't want to say you illustrated it because that would mean you drew the illustrations by hand. You can just say "story by" or "written by". Hope that helps!
This is brilliant! thank you for sharing all the details. Just wondering, my Canva doesn't seem to have the little colour drop to get the same colours as other elements. Do you know how to get this?
Hi! In the color swatches panel, do you see a little swatch that looks like it's rainbow?
Thank you! I agree with all of this, and I appreciate the alternative ideas!
Yay!! You're so welcome!!
great ideas thank you

Thank you so much Pat!
Beyond helpful! The book is so cute! Love it
Aw thank you so much!
Where it says "check this box if the cover includes a barcode", what if I don't but I have an ISBN #? Thank you by the way with these videos you have.
Then that's ok, just don't check the box, and Amazon will generate the barcode for you 🙂
Very good tutorial. Ta.
Very nice! As always I got a few ideas for the book I’m working on 😊
Yay, I'm so glad! 💕
SO MUCH THANKS

What's cost of Wix Website?
There's a free version but it does have a Wix banner across the top of the page. The light plan (removes the banner) is $17/mo, but if you want e-commerce you'll need to do the $29/mo or $36/mo plan
I followed your tutorial and finished my book but I am continuing to get error messages from Kdp saying I need to add the .125 and .25 to my page sizes when I did the pages to the 8.375 x 8.5 already so not sure if I am putting something in wrong or not. I did go back and click flatten pdf this time before uploading it again to see if that makes a difference.. my art goes beyond the page so i chose with bleed.. what am I doing wrong?
